The Dark Sky Preserve Program was created by the IDA in 2006 to recognize people who do their best to protect dark locations from light pollution sources such as street lamps, building lights, and poorly shielded lights used inside businesses and homes. There are now 16 International Dark Sky Places around the world:There is an application and review process for each designation. The Dark Sky Places and the International Dark-Sky Association gold tier parks offer lighting guidelines to help protect both dark skies and wildlife. The gold tier parks offer lighting guidelines for areas such as roads, visitor centers, campgrounds, and parking lots. One of these locations is the National Park Service Chaco Culture National Historical Park.
